November 29th
Sarah’s Entry
Up before 6 to lather up with the sunscreen and head over to Maalaea to catch the Fourwinds II to snorkel at Molokini crater.
The snorkel trip was great. We had perfect weather. They had bagels and pineapple for breakfast. I found some chunky peanut butter to put on a cinnamon bagel. I then coerced Derek into signing up for Snuba. This is a stretch considering he has freaked out at the last two snorkeling attempts. We had to sit through a half hour class while the boat was headed out to the crater. We paused in the middle to see a whale tail and some bottle nose dolphins that were playing with the ship.
We chose to be the second group of snuba’ers. Two reasons, second group was smaller and to give Derek time to get his mask adjusted properly. We hopped in to snarkel, took a few shots and then the camera died. I don’t believe it will recover. Derek was still having problems with leakage due to his mustache, but when the dive instructer heard he was about to back out he took extra care trying to get everything fight for him. After 15 minutes of panic he got it all working and we had an amazing time under the water.
By the time we came back up everyone else had already eaten and all that was left was the pulled pork, which was fine with me. Paired with white wine and more Maui chips it hit the spot. Derek found he likes Coors and since I agreed to drive he had 5 of them. He was calling them “Coors Heavy” since they weren’t coors light. Lol. On the way back to to the harbor we spotter 3-4 green sea turtles.
After we left the boat and got our top down and dance tunes cranked up. We (I) headed down and around to Ioa valley to see the needle. It was gorgeous and breathtaking. On the way back to town we stopped at a stand and Derek picked up a whole loaf of Banana bread. Next stop was Island Papery a scrapbook store. I picked up just a few nice embellishments to put my book together. I grabbed a regular shave ice to split with Derek and that turned out to be a mistake… way more sugar than I can handle.
Now a nap for me and Monday Night Football for D before dinner at Little Italy.
Dinner was good, we ended up changing seats because there was a family with small children that I wasn’t in the mood to deal with. We took our deserts to go and on leaving the Maitre D told us he had moved two more couples away so we didn’t feel so bad.
After a quick dip in the hot tub we weren’t back to the cabin to mess with pictures before going to the comedy show. Only once we got in bed we never got out again. I ended up watching Star Trek and Derek fell asleep.
Derek’s Entry
Up early again to head out to snorkel. For the record I didn’t want to do it. Snorkeling has never went well for me. Turns out it wasn’t too bad this time. Signed up for Snuba but was going to pass on it. The dive instructor though talked me into it. I had to smother my mustache with Vaseline to stop the water from seeping in. It took me 15 minutes of the 30 minute dive to quit freaking out and enjoy the views. Once I got accustomed to breathing through a tank and remembered how to make myself sink more into the water it was great. Once back on board the Fourwinds I had myself 5 Coors and some pulled pork and chips.
Sarah drove us back from there and we stopped by the Iao needle afterwards. It was a beautiful view. Stopped and got us some Maui banana bread, awesome!! Went back to the ship and Sarah went down to take a nap and I headed to watch some MNF at 3:30 in the afternoon. Seemed weird but it was all good with a tall Bass in hand.
Off to dinner at Little Italy, with a stop by Napa wine bar for a double champagne from happy hour to take to dinner. Got sat behind a family with little kids that were loud and asked to be moved. Glad we did, then we headed off to the hot tub and then a drink at Lanai for happy hour. I passed out while Sarah watched Star Trek.

Our full day in Maui
November 28th
Sarah’s Entry
Up early after a turbulent night sleep. Edited yesterdays pics before heading up to the spa to weighin. Not as bad as I feard. Off to grab some oj to make some mimosas in our room. Grabbed breakfast at Cadillac Diner which was yummy. The service was very friendly but the food itself took awhile.
We made a stop at the desk again to make our reservations for the week. Italian on Monday, Bistro on Thursday and murder mystery on Tuesday.
Off the ship by 8:28 and in our rental car by 9:00. The car which is a convertible, yippee!! Dereks first time in one, we’ll see how he likes it. Off to Haleakala crater. Arrived at visitor center @ 9:54
Made it to summit where the cloud cover was too heavy tto really see. Come to find out clouds are really cold! No hiking the trails for us.
Off to find the only winery in Hawaii…Come to find out there is a winery on the big island too, oops.
The rain seems to be following us down the volcano.
The winery was okay, we picked up one bottle to take back, we’ll see if it gets confiscated.
The real find was the Ulupalakua Ranch store. We split a Maui grown elk burger. It was delish w/Maui onions on it.
Next stop Surfing goat Dairy. The dairy was ok. We didn’t realize they were closing at 2:00 so we just grabbed a garlic herb chees and crackers. We found it shaved 30 minutes off our drive time by cutting across the island through the sugar cane fields.
Landed at Hilo Hatties and it was as big a tourist trap as was to be expected. By then my lower back was inflamed and it was hard to concentrate on finding Derek a new aloha shirt. We ended up picking up Tylenol (I popped four) walking down to the court house and banyan tree. It was amazing.
To further help my back pain we made a stop at Cheeseburger in Paradise and I had a double trouble which was the best pina colada ever.
So we changed in the parking lot of Hilo Hattie’s, put on my face and headed to Feast at Lele, our luau, listening to winter wonderland on the radio.
The feast itself was everything we hoped for. We had front row seats thanks to seasoned prior planning. Ahem ahem. The flow of the food and shw as perfect and the food was so well done, even the leviche we were leary of totally surprised us both.
After a wonderful evening we hopped back in the car put the top down and jammed to the Hawaiian children choir singing the Hawaiian twelve days of Christmas including, poi, missionaries, beer and five golden pigs J
We just barely found a parking spot, we were 80% sure where we parked was ok.
Dropped our stuff in the room, went to the Lanai martini bar for one last drink before bed with benadryl.
Derek’s Entry
Up early to head to Halaekala crater. This was one of the things I was most looking forward to. I was very disappointed that it was cloudy out and we couldn’t keep the top down on the convertible. It was still a fun drive up the mountain into the clouds. Rained most of the day and drove around making a couple of stops for Sarah. Had an awesome elk burger! Parked at the Hilo Hatties parking lot in Lahnai and went down to the courthouse to see the Banyan tree. I had no idea at first what I was looking at, ok a bunch of trees in a park. Nope, it is one tree, it hangs branches down and grows into the ground and reroots itself. Kind of amazing. Got some Tylenol for Sarah’s back and a drink to wash it down. Then off to Feast at Lele.
Feast at Lele was great. I would say it was the best luau I have ever been to, but it is the only one. The food was great and so was the dancing. The drinks were good and I just thoroughly enjoyed it all. We had seats right up front. After leaving the luau we were able to put the top down for the drive back to the ship. Got the last parking spot by the ship and headed up to Lanai bar for a martini and then some benadryl to sleep.
